SUBJECT: SPIROMETRY PROCEDURE

PERSONNEL: RN, LVN, MA  currently certified and trained by the NIOSH Approved Spirometry Testing and Respiratory Surveillance Training Program

EQUIPMENT: Renaissance Spirometry System

  • Refer to manual for equipment maintenance
  • Weekly linearity checks are performed and the results retained per UCSC Records Retention Policy

PURPOSE: Use of spirometry at the Student Health Center is limited to screening for SCUBA clearances.  Diagnostic spirometry testing is not perfomed at the SHC.

Spirometry is derived from the Greek SPIRO (to breathe) and METER (to measure).

PROCEDURE:

  • Follow Renaissance Spirometry System Operator’s Guide for Reference and Procedure (found on Spirometry cart)
  • Calibration Check is performed once daily before the procedure on the days Spirometry is performed
  • Patient Preparation (vital signs explanation)
  • Complete Prescreening Questions ( HC 740, see attached)
  • Enter Patient Data on form and spirometer
  • Administor spirometery screening
  • Print test results and route to Medical Records Department

 DOCUMENTATION AND FOLLOW UP:

  • Route completed calibration form, Patient Questionnaire, spirometry graph and results to the Medical Records Department for scanning
  • Complete encounter note
  • Consult with clinician if test results are outside of normal range
