Nurse Clinic (NC) provides services for students requiring routine immunizations, Tuberculosis screening and testing, initiation of contraception, treatment of non-genital warts, self-injection training, consultation and immunizations prior to international travel.

SHS cooperates with campus organizations such as Education Abroad Program (EAP) to provide services to students whose programs require specialized care.

The Nurse Clinic is staffed by registered nurses who are trained in current guidelines and mentored in the department to keep updated with current recommendations for immunizations and travel medicine.

Registered nurses in Nurse Clinic operate under standardized procedures for the provision of prophylactic medications and immunizations for travel to foreign countries based on the most current CDC recommendations.

Procedure:
  1. Patients make appointments through the Appointment Desk for Nurse Clinic.
  2. Patients are cared for by staff member appropriate to the level of care needed as delineated by professional policies on Scope of Practice and in accordance with Standardized Procedures including  allergy shots, routine immunizations, travel consultations, Tuberculosis screening, and contraception. See specific Standardized procedures for individual protocols
  3. Appropriate information materials on immunizations and travel health are available to patients at the Nurse Clinic
  4. The nurse documents each encounter according to the standards delineated in the UCSC Student Health Center Policy on Documentation of Care.
Key Points:
  • Students requesting information on foreign travel are given up to date guidelines on immunizations, medications and safety tips for the area to which they are going.
  • Students who need TB testing for work, school, or due to possible exposure or symptoms are provided TB testing according to protocol.
  • Students traveling as part of a University sponsored program are cared for according to guidelines for that program and location of travel.
