To provide a means to obtain accurate and timely laboratory reports in the event of equipment failure.

Send any tests requiring STAT results to the appropriate reference laboratory immediately. All other specimens should be prepared for shipment to the appropriate reference laboratory at the next scheduled pick-up time. Refrigerate or freeze specimens for any tests that are normally batched and run only on scheduled days, until the equipment is again functional and testing can be performed. Check instrument manuals for proper specimen storage instructions.

Notify the Laboratory Supervisor (or designee) immediately of any malfunctioning laboratory instrumentation. If the Supervisor (or designee) is unavailable, contact Technical Service for the instrument. Technical Service numbers and account numbers are posted on each analyzer.

Do not attempt to repair any instrument beyond routine maintenance unless instructed to do so by the Laboratory Supervisor (or designee) or Technical Service. Document all malfunctions and corrective actions in the Corrective Action/ Maintenance section in the log books appropriate to the analyzer.
