Public and Clinical Spaces

  • The reception/waiting area and the triage offices are subject to high volume use by students who are acutely ill or, in other ways, carriers of infectious/contagious pathogens.  By nature of the patient traffic volume, fomite surfaces in these areas can easily be contaminated and become sources of infection to other patients and staff.
  • SHC staff working in these high risk areas are responsible for cleaning surfaces and equipment at the end of the day as noted below. 
Procedure: 

Terminal cleaning information about approved products can be found in the Utility Rooms (see Product Use Chart) and in the departmental SDS Binders.

A. RECEPTION AREA END-OF-DAY CLEANING

1. All horizontal surfaces and patient-use areas are cleaned/disinfected daily or as needed using approved cleaning products. These surfaces and areas include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Counter tops in the patient access area as well as in the registration work stations
  • Plastic clipboards and pens
  • Desk/table work surfaces
  • Surfaces of chairs in waiting area
  • Phone receivers and computer keyboards, mouse                            
  • Computer touch screens
  • Door handles

B. TRIAGE & NURSING OFFICES END-OF-DAY CLEANING

1. TRIAGE OFFICES:   All horizontal surfaces and patient-use areas are cleaned/disinfected daily or as needed using approved cleaning products. These surfaces and areas include but are not limited to the following:

  • Desk top and other horizontal surfaces
  • Surface of  chairs and couches
  • Phone receivers and computer keyboards, mouse
  • Hand-held electronic thermometers and pulse oxymeter units
  • Door and cupboard handles

2. NURSING OFFICES: All horizontal surfaces and patient-use areas are cleaned/disinfected daily using approved cleaning products. These surfaces and areas include but are not limited to the following;

  • Medication preparation area, desk, countertops and other horizontal surfaces
  • Phone receivers and computer keyboards, mouse   
  • Computer touch screens                                                                        
  • Door and cupboard handles
  • Chairs
  • Check sharps container: replace if full
