The following standardized procedures outline the specific situations in which a Registered Nurse (RN) at the University of California, Santa Cruz Student Health Center may provide a patient with a prescription for a medication or initiate orders for labs or x-rays. The use of these procedures is limited to the UCSC Student Health Center. These procedures may not be used in any other setting.

These standardized procedures were developed in collaboration with nursing staff, clinical providers, the medical director and the executive director of the Student Health Center using up-to-date references for current practice. Each procedure was reviewed and revised by members of the team. Each RN shall sign the Statement of Agreement and Approval upon initial hire and when revised thereafter, indicating their intent to follow these Standardized Nursing Procedures, with implied approval of all the policies, protocols and procedures in this document.

The standardized procedures have been written in a consistent format which is in compliance with the guidelines found in the Board of Registered Nursing, Title 16, California Code of Regulations, Section 1474. Our manual begins with a “Generic Standardized Procedure” which lists and explains the subsections found in every procedure.

As a cross reference, an RN Standardized Procedure Medication List is a part of these procedures to provide easy access to the approved medications covered in the procedures.

The standardized procedures are to be reviewed and revised every two years in order to assure that the Student Health Center is providing the most current medical care.
