NEBULIZER TREATMENT

SUBJECT: NEBULIZER TREATMENT

PERSONNEL: RN, LVN, MA upon orders of clinician

EQUIPMENT:

  • DeVilbiss Compressor,
  • Nebulizer Tubing
  • Medications as ordered by the Clinician: Albuterol Sulfate Inhalation Solution 0.083% and/or Ipratropium Bromide Inhalation Solution 0.02%
  • Fluids to rinse mouth

PROCEDURE:
MACHINE PREPARATION:

  • Plug in the DeVilbiss unit into a grounded power outlet.
  • Assemble nebulizer parts
  • Connect nebulizer tubing to the air-outlet connector on unit.
  • Place medications into the nebulizer cup and have the patient hold upright in hand.

PATIENT PREPARATION:

  • Explain treatment to patient, including need to drink fluids and possibility of feeling shaky from medication.
  • Place mouthpiece between the teeth.
  • With mouth closed, inhale deeply and slowly through mouth as aerosol begins to flow then exhale slowly through the mouthpiece.
  • If for any reason the treatment must be interrupted, simply press power switch off.
  • Offer patient fluids and encourage drinking to help expectoration and hydration.

AFTER THE TREATMENT:

  • Document vital signs. peak flows, and oxygen saturation on clinic record.
  • Have patient re-checked by clinician After treatment(s) are complete, discard tubing and mouthpiece.
  • Unplug unit.


MACHINE CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE:

  • Clean compressor cabinet per manufacturer instructions (reference "Disinfection of Patient Care Equipment" policy)
  • Staff is assigned to change filters every 6 months
