Policy:

The Same Day Clinic service is open to students for illness or injury during operating hours. The Student Health Center is closed during campus closure and legal holidays.  The service is available to all registered students.  The service is not available to staff, faculty, or family of students.  Acuity levels determine if care is provided at the Student Health Center or if the  Emergency Medical Response 911 system is activated.

Patients in acute distress are immediately seen by the Triage Nurse.  The work of the Triage nurse is explained in the Policy on Triage Nursing.

No patients presenting with an immediate medical concern leave without an interview by a licensed staff member. Illness and injury are handled in the Same Day Clinic. Routine medical care is referred for appointment.

A licensed physician is present or immediately available for telephone consultation to mid-level providers staffing during hours of operation.

Same Day Clinic staff are trained in basic emergency response.

Procedure:

Registration

Patients are registered at the Front Desk to obtain demographic and insurance information.  At registration students coughing or complaining of cough are provided a mask and instructed to wear for the duration of their visit at the health center.

Triage

The Triage Nurse screens patients to determine urgency and routes them to the appropriate service. The Triage Nurse may independently handle routine requests in accordance with the Student Health Center Triage Guidelines. The Triage Nurse reviews the Medical Record and documents the Triage visit in the Medical Record according to Student Health Center Triage Guidelines  and Policy and Procedure Clinical Records.

Same Day Clinic

Same Day Clinic nursing personnel obtain and document vital signs in the electronic medical record, prepare the patient for exam, and communicate the room location to the clinician.

Nurses may assess and treat patients in accordance with Student Health Center Nursing Standardized Procedures.

The clinician performs a history and physical, orders diagnostic testing appropriate to the patient complaint, and determines the plan of care. The clinician documents the visit in accordance with Student Health Center Policy and Procedure Clinical Records.
